At Coundon Court, our Maths curriculum is rich in both skills and knowledge allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of mathematics.

We prepare our students for everyday life through a curriculum that focuses on skills-based learning, critical thinking and problem solving. We strive to ensure that our students achieve fluency in mathematics.

Our high quality mathematics curriculum encourages all students to be open minded at trying new topics in Maths and enjoy the experience of learning to solve problems. All students are taught to appreciate the power of mathematics in our everyday lives and because of this; students become curious learners. Our curriculum provides opportunities for all students to be sufficiently numerate, tackle real world Maths and become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice, with regular recall to develop and deepen understanding. Enabling students to reason mathematically and be able to explain their ideas, ensures students can create relationships and justify using mathematical language. Students will be able to solve problems and apply the knowledge and skills acquired to complex, multi-step problems included worded questions where they will interpret mathematical language.

Powerful Knowledge in Mathematics

The mathematics curriculum at Coundon Court aims to empower students to develop and apply problem solving skills focussing on the overarching and spiralling core mathematical components of:

  • Number
  • Proportion
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Statistics
  • Probability
  • Calculus and rates of change (at A-Level, although some pre-cursors are introduced at GCSE)
  • Mechanics and modelling real life situations (at A-level, though some content will have been met in GCSE Science)

As staff, we aim to encourage and support students to develop important mathematical behaviours and attitudes, from thinking logically and reasoning, to developing secure mathematical notation and understanding of key terminology and, vitally, to understand and appreciate the links between the different areas of mathematics.

Aims of the Mathematics Curriculum at Coundon

  1. To develop the mathematical knowledge of all students, taking into account prior knowledge and understanding, through:
  1. Gaining knowledge of mathematical concepts, terminology, notation, facts, generalisations, methods and techniques
  1. Meeting the requirements of the national curriculum, the GCSE specification and A-Level specification
  1. To give students the confidence to use their mathematical abilities and skills by:
  1. Developing understanding and interpretation of mathematical information presented in a variety of forms
  1. Developing and embedding core mathematical skills that are vital across different branches of mathematics through interleaving of these skills
  1. To develop an approach towards problem solving through
  1. Applying knowledge gained to solve routine problems
  1. Selecting and applying appropriate techniques through a deep understanding of mathematical principles to be able to strategize to tackle problems in unfamiliar situations
  1. To engender curiosity and communication of mathematical ideas by
  1. Promoting explanations of strategies and communicating findings and conclusions to an audience
  1. Developing confidence and a willingness to learn new information, ideas and concepts across the broad range of disciplines within the subject of mathematics
